Fintech Compliance Review Automation

Fintechs pursuing a payment licence had their websites, card designs, and policy documents reviewed by hand against a checklist running to hundreds of pages. We built six workflows and a dedicated client portal to run that review, cutting review time from hours to minutes.

Manual review time

The problem

Fintechs going through payment licensing must put their website, card design, and policy documents through compliance review. The process was manual and expertise-heavy: Visa and Mastercard requirements, rules that vary by country, and a checklist hundreds of pages long. The client already had working infrastructure, but it was hard to maintain, produced inconsistent results, and stalled on large sites.

How we approached it

The decisive call here was methodological rather than technical: instead of rewriting a working but troubled system, we reviewed it node by node and refactored systematically. Rewriting a live compliance system would have meant losing known behaviour and re-validating rules that were already validated. On the crawling side, Firecrawl builds a site map first and then fetches the URLs, status tracking sits in Supabase, and long-running jobs report asynchronous progress. At the end of the engagement we built the client a dedicated MidOffice portal.

Outcome

  • Six separate workflows covering website, card design, and policy reviews
  • Requirement sets that vary dynamically by programme and country, managed through Google Sheets
  • End-to-end pipeline: portal, n8n, Firecrawl, compliance evaluation, and report
  • Stalling on large sites resolved, and results made consistent
  • Asynchronous progress reporting on long-running reviews

What this project generalises to

When you inherit a system that already works, the first instinct is usually to rewrite it. In a domain like compliance, where the rules have already been validated in production, that is often the most expensive route — a systematic refactor preserves proven behaviour and leaves a reversible point at every step.
